More Memories To Enjoy

Monday morning took us to more beaches and wonderful whale watching and beachcombing that Dad loves. He could live on the beach so we always bring our lunch and we are free to stop wherever and stay as long as we wish.

As I said previously there seems to be no end to beaches. There actually are 113 miles of beaches on this little island with stunning rain forests that conceal breathtaking waterfalls, flora and fauna found nowhere else on earth. I still have to pinch myself to realize I truly did get this wonderful opportunity to visit this Island.

Monday evening we took in the Luau at Smith's Tropical Paradise nd indeed it was a paradise as we rode the tram through the gardens and then attended the imu ceremony an ancient tradition of the pig roast and off to the Luau House and a great buffet with a bar for pop, beer and Mai Tai. Great atmosphere and wonderful buffet while enjoying the Hawaiian music and song. Then came the Aloha show in the torch-lit Lagoon Amphitheatre as they told the story of the union of the islands in rhythm with colourful, authentic performances from Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, the Philippines, New Zealand, China, and Japan. They are very proud of how all these peoples formed the Kauai we know today.

Tuesday was a quiet day to rest, read, do laundry and prepare for the rest of the week. Then came another big and wonderful day yesterday as we boarded the Holo Holo Catamaran to sail to Kipu area for whale and dolphin watching while wined and dined with a great supper, beer, Mai Tai or pop (soda as they say).

The whales were very active as this is the mating season and as with all males, the male whales put on a performance to attract the females. Much breaching and tail slaps. Denzle got a lot of pictures. The little spinner dolphins were so sweet and calm in comparison to the very aggressive whales.

Gayle and I sat outside on the front of the Catamaran for the ride to beat the storm and head for the sunset. Most exciting and memorable ride of a lifetime. We were literally drenched as if we had been in the water for hours. That warm water spray is so much fun. The south Pacific waters are 78 degrees, like a warm bath but we took a shower instead. Then for a beautiful sunset. We were truly blessed.

Then home and card playing where Gayle and I won the first game but were again humiliated in the second. Who cares the socializing is the fun, and I must say we have had fun each and everyday as we journeyed this trip together. A great big thank to all who made it possible.

Beauty Abounds

On to the beaches , rivers and trails with beautiful falls. Saturday was the first day with rain but still much to do and places to go.

We heard there was less rain the further south we could go so we drove to Kealia Beach and Wailuha Heritage Trail & River to see the Twin Falls (famous from Fantasy island) flowing into the Wailuhe River. I've added pictures that are the only way to let you experience the beauty as well. We had lunch a Kalaipaki Joe's on Kalaipaki Beach. Great little restaurant (sport's bar) in competition to the Sea Hawks & Chargers football game. I think there were a dozen TVs in that little place to say nothing of the ardent fans for both teams. What an experience.

Thanks to our son, Denzle, who captioned the pictures about where we have been and put a place to each picture. Denzle and Gayle have made this a memorable trip so far. They are open to anything we want to do or places we want to see and care for us lovingly each day.

At Kamokila Village I read a history of Hawaiian Spirituality and the importance of love of self and others, respect and caring for each other. We followed the path of ancient sacred places to the "Bellstone" (the royal birthing stone) which as the picture shows is a flat rock that made me thankful for comfortable hospital beds. When the birth was accomplished, the stone was hit to ring throughout the valley. Its message is 'the royal baby had been born'. I prayed at the birthing stone for my grand-daughter-in-law who was in labour. It was a very unifying feeling of love for life old and new. We then celebrated mass at St Sylvester's Church and again I prayed for Andrea, Marc and the baby to be.

Today is Sunday and we awoke to the wonderful news that Andrea & Marc's little girl was born. What a joy and we look forward to further news of this beautiful little one.

Our next excursion was to the Kauai Coffee Plantation, learned a lot and after trying quite a few coffees ordered a few lbs to be sent home shortly after our arrival home and then we have to have a "coffee clatch" to let friends test our choices.

We drove on to Salt Pond Park, in Hawaii you can't buy local salt as it is believed to have health and spirtual value and must only be given as to a friend and never purchased. Then on to Spouting Horn, where lava tubes about 10 feet apart on the shoreline make the sound of a dragon and spout up to 30 feet in the air as the waves come rushing in. Really beautiful.

We ended our trip watching the whales along the Poipu shoreline as we ate our lunch. Wonderful day.

Update from Kauai

Hi again to all with apologies for not making entries for so long. Troubles with my head and the computer. Just too much excitement for this old head. Never could have imagined what this island is like.

We had our flight via helicopter Wednesday morning. It was so exciting. The sun shone and we flew all over the island with narration as we flew. In the afternoon we went to Hanalei Bay and relaxed on the beach. Then we drove around sightseeing. We saw Taro Fields, explored the dry caves, bought a coconut (never tasted coconut like it). The milk was wonderful as well and very different.

On Thursday another restful day at Anini Beach, enjoyed the water, picked coral from the beach. Denzle snorkelled and did a video of Green Turtles feeding on the ocean floor. You can't swim as the waves are too strong but we get the lap up and enjoyed the wonderful waves of warm water. Later we drove to Kilauea Point to see the lighthouse that is no longer in use but celebrated 100th anniversary last year. We watched whales for about an hour from the point.

Denzle has taken over 300 pictures we'll share a few. Today we went to Polihale Beach and again everyone patiently waited for me as I enjoyed myself in the water that I find hard to leave, watched surfers and had our lunch at Queen's Pond, looking out over this vast ocean with a 17 mile beach of beautiful sand with only 6 others on the beach that we could see.

The island has so many beautiful beaches that you have your area almost to yourself at anytime. We went up to Waimea Canyon in the afternoon, a 12 mile drive straight up the mountain to 3400 ft elevation. It was not as spectacular at the summit due to fog and rain but certainly worth the trip. We have now seen it from the air in the helicopter, and will again visit that site when we take our catamaran trip around the island.

We were blessed to see a beautiful rainbow over the Waimea Canyon. This is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, named so by Mark Twain. After coming down the mountain we visited the Waimea Plantation, once a sugar cane plantation and now a place for visitors to stay in individual cabins, for up to 10 people with a wonderful restaurant and grounds that take you breath away. Hammocks under the banyan trees, beautiful beach, volleyball courts, spas, non-denominational chapel and access to so much more. There is a little gift shop and small museum of the Faye family, who came from Norway, who ran the plantation from the early 1900's to 1950's.  I know I rambled but I will try to explain some about these sites in my next blog as I should now be able to make daily entries.
We are choosing pictures of places we loved and things that excited.

Enjoy!

Aloha From Kauai!!

Landed in Lihue at 12;50 on January 6 - one day late. We had plane problems in Edmonton that had to be corrected and signed off even before the de-icing. We left 2 hours late and missed our flight from Seattle on Sunday. No problem - just another experience.

Alaska Air put us up in the Hilton with meal certificates and we had a beautiful day in Seattle. We left Monday at 9:10am. After we settled in our place in Bali Hai, we covered the beaches on the northern corner of the island and continued Tuesday with a little shopping as well.

The beauty of the island is awe-inspiring, never saw anything like it. The mountains, the vegatation, the rivers, the ocean and the beaches. Then there are the birds and you are all aware of my love of birds of every shape and size.

We went to the cliffs Wednesday morning for a walk and were welcomed by albatrosses that I learned are an endangered species. They are beautiful. Just a little info: they mate for life and they fly around in pairs.

We do the helicopter flight over the island Thursday at 8:30 am so that entry will have a little more excitement. There should be some pictures to pass on as well.

The rest of the crew are waiting for me for supper so I better call thsi quits for today and sorry for the delay. I'm blaming the delay on Edmonton's cold weather seeing that were were held up at the airport. Everyone here says they are having a cold spell but it is 74 and we are loving it.

I think of you all each day with love.

Kauai Here We Come

With only two sleeps left I am almost too excited to get things packed in the right suitcase and will probably take too much of what I don't need and leave a very important item at home. But you know what; I don't care - all will be well.  Worrying is not my forte, so let the fun begin.

This has been a dream since Liz told me some 20 years ago; "Mom, you would love Hawaii". Well here I come, thanks to a lot of wonderful people most of whom are our kids. It will be great fun travelling with Denzle and Gayle and worry free because of the generosity of the kids at Christmas. Thank you, your kindness is soooooo appreciated by us both.

I have read everything I could get my hands on about Kauai, ( left the rest of the islands for others to explore and enjoy) and as the days go by I hope I can share this journey with you through stories and pictures. I have enjoyed other friends' blogs as they journey and hope I do this justice. If a few of you get a bit of joy from our travels it will be worth it.

We leave Edmonton Airport  at 6:40 am Sunday and will arrive at 1:05 pm in Lihue. Stay tuned; same place, same station in a couple of days.

The Pink Gramma Welcome

I am very happy to be sharing this blog starting with my trip to Kauai. Hope you stay in touch!
